For this year, Silverado 1500 has been redesigned inside and out, and now it's all-new, built on a brand-new platform, with a fully boxed steel frame that weighs 88 pounds less, that's about 10 percent more rigid than previous generations, and that contributes to an overall weight around 450 pounds lighter than before.

There are several all-new engine and transmission combos, from a V6 mated to a six-speed automatic and a turbocharged I4 with an eight-speed auto to a V8 with a six-speed auto and a V8 with an eight-speed auto. There are even a V8 and 10-speed auto pairing as well as a 3.0-liter turbodiesel and 10-speed auto combo. Power ratings range from 285 to 420 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque to 460, depending on trim. The first takeaway: Silverado 1500 can haul payloads up to 2,250 pounds in boxes measuring 5-foot-8 to 8 feet and in anywhere from 62.9 cubic feet to 81.9, depending on trim. The second: it can tow a whopping 12,200 pounds.
