When a driver presses down on the brake pedal, the vehicle often reacts as intended and does so smoothly. Thank the brake pads and other parts for the result. If the brake system, all of its parts, functions properly, stepping on the brake pedal should slow and stop the vehicle. Pressure and friction caused by the brake pads help this cause.

Brake pads connect to the rotors, which are discs attached to the wheels. When the brake pad presses against the rotor, the rotor slows and stops the spinning wheel. Pads rely on the calipers and fluid from the cylinder to perform their duties.

Worn brake pads are not helpful to safe driving, and friction does wear down the pads. Drivers who hear alarming noises upon pressing down on the brake pedal should bring the vehicle to a Schoolcraft technician for an inspection.
